Contents:

Approaching ‘the social‘ as an outcome of interdependencies of classifications, narratives and discourses on the one hand and social practices and institutional contexts on the other, essentialist and holistic views on ‘culture‘ are to be critically reviewed.

Within a transcultural lens, culture is the product of hybridization, entanglements and exchanges. Thus, cultures can no longer be understood as homogeneous or separated, but are complex and inner differentiated. Cultures go beyond national borders, their central meaning is permanently fought out by different actors within unequal and transnationally linked power structures.

This module will focus on (and differentiate between) various concepts of subject, culture and power. It aims at critically reflecting different fields of application of theories of culture and society. What is more, it deals with different methodologies for analyzing and understanding cultural entanglements from a critical/constructivist perspective and apply them exemplarily.
