22431 - Workshop Urban Design Project Modulübersicht

Module Number: 22431 - module is no longer offered from SS 2014
Module Title:Workshop Urban Design Project
  Workshop Stadträumliches Entwerfen
Department: Faculty 2 - Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning
Responsible Staff Member:
  • Gastprof. Casper, Jens
Language of Teaching / Examination:English
Duration:1 semester
Frequency of Offer: Every summer semester
Credits: 10
Learning Outcome:The multilayered transformation processes in European-influenced urban spaces form the point of departure for the open questions to be devised by interdisciplinary teams. Dialogue-based and reflexive design practices as well as a conceptual repertoire and a toolbox for the focused acquisition of knowledge are the prerequisites needed to work through the architectural tasks with an awareness of a site-specific and country-specific building culture. The objective of this workshop is for the team to carry out an independent and comprehensive analysis and fundamental investigation of a complex problem, establish a programme for it, and develop a solution. Scientific and artistic methods of analysis will be employed to examine and resolve the essential constructional, historical, economic and legal parameters of the design task. Methods of teamwork and individual work will be acquired, and learning to cope with the comments made within the design group will contribute towards reflective training and design optimisation. The student masters various methods of presentation and communicating ideas, and applies these accordingly to the design task in order to be able to visualize and communicate his/her approaches and solutions in a comprehensible manner to an audience and online. The results of the work are presented by each of the students individually or in a group, in an auditorium setting and in the existing Internet portal.

In the urban design Project workshop, localized task assignments will be formulated and supervised by instructors from the local institution of higher education. With practical relevance, open questions are concretized in a cooperative and step-by-step manner. For this purpose, process-oriented and reflexive strategies, individual and collective design methods, communicative argumentation, and diverse methods of decision-making serve to develop a practice-related basis of discourse for the design task. In the first part at the beginning of the workshop, site visits and lectures work introduce the project work. In the initial phase of work, the parameters are examined and evaluated, and the basic knowledge that is needed is acquired. In a second phase, a concept, approach or idea is developed. Short design exercises contribute to placing the focus on courses of action and key issues. In the second part of the workshop, alternative approaches to solving a task are investigated in teams. The third phase allows for elaboration, with continual feedback regarding the conditions and circumstances specific to the design. In conclusion, the results are prepared for viewing/presentation and discussed publicly at the respective higher education institution. The project work is accompanied by learning formats such as lectures given by students and instructors; seminar-based investigations facilitate basic evaluation of the questions posed, and excursions address the topic and provide on-location experience. Communicative building blocks such as group discussions, individual crit sessions, internal "pin-ups," formal presentations, and semi-public exhibitions constitute the reflective and imparting framework for the project work.

The work of the students is supported by changing, topic-related visiting critiques and commentary from local experts. The project work is carried out in the spatial context of the studio and alternates between work done individually and as part of a team. A schedule will be issued at the beginning of the workshop.
Recommended Prerequisites:None
Mandatory Prerequisites:None
Forms of Teaching and Proportion:
  • Study project / 10 Hours per Week per Semester
  • Self organised studies / 150 Hours
Teaching Materials and Literature:Will be disclosed in the applicable classes.
Module Examination:Unspecified - Specification from winter semester 2016/17 required!
Assessment Mode for Module Examination:The defence of the work takes place as part of a public presentation of the results at the partner institution of higher education. The works will be exhibited by the students in a manner openly accessible to members of the higher education institution. The performance assessment criteria will be specified in binding form by the instructors at the beginning, as part of the assignment of the design task. They can include the production of plans and models and other suitable means of visualization (in various scales), the submission of written assignments, and/or a report/presentation (oral examination). The results of the workshop are to be submitted to the advisors, on-time according to the workshop schedule, in electronic form. Objects and models are to be included as reproductions. The workshop results are to be summarized in a short English text, which shall also be included on the storage media.
Evaluation of Module Examination:Performance Verification – graded

Part of the Study Programme:
  • no assignment
Remarks:The workshop will be conducted cooperatively at every higher education institution that has students of the architecture-related course of studies Architektur.Studium.Generale (max. size: 30 students).
