35442 - Sustainable Use of Underground Resources, Geothermal Energy and CO2 Storage Modulübersicht

Module Number: 35442 - module is no longer offered from WS 2016/17
Module Title:Sustainable Use of Underground Resources, Geothermal Energy and CO2 Storage
Nachhaltige Nutzung geologischer Ressourcen, Geothermie und CO2 Speicherung
Department: Faculty 3 - Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Energy Systems
Responsible Staff Member:
  • Prof. Dr.-Ing. Schwarz, Harald
Language of Teaching / Examination:English
Duration:1 semester
Frequency of Offer: Every winter semester
Credits: 4
Learning Outcome:Students will get a deeper understanding the exploration thermal energy reservoirs or depth section area to sequestrate CO2 and the necessary technology for these proceses
Contents:The lecture encounters basic knowledge for the geo-energetic utilization of underground reservoirs. The lecture helps to understand the basic geology needed for the exploration of geothermal energy reservoirs or of the depth sections to sequestrate CO2 and shows up the practice to make access to these reservoirs by drilling and the engineering of the reservoir by enhancing methods. The lecture describes the technology to make use of the Earth’s heat for direct use, power, and/or chill and gives boundary conditions for its economic and environmental utilization.
Main chapters: 1) Exploration with Reservoir Definition and Exploration Methods, 2) Development with Drilling into the interesting Reservoirs, 3) Reservoir Engineering incl. Enhancing Methods and Reservoirs in Operation, 4) Process Engineering with Direct Use and Conversion of Earth’s Heat into Chill or Power, Economics and Environmental Impact and specific aspects of Carbon capture.
