Learning Outcome:The students know various critical approaches to reflect on discourses about culture and heritage. They also know how to apply different methodological tools to examine and compare different forms and practices of heritage. Altogether, the students develop the ability to identify dominant and marginalized discourses on heritage and culture in national and transnational contexts.
Contents:The module introduces students to the field of Critical Heritage Studies. It focuses on cultural and social theories which scrutinize social, political and technological discursive practices through which the field of heritage is constructed along and across national borders. These theories address heritage not as a given entity, but rather as a social field in which the centrality of culture and its relation to identity are constantly negotiated by different powerful actors.
