Learning Outcome:Rationale:
The class provides an overview of the scientific approaches to think about different facets of culture and heritage from a variety of disciplinary and academic backgrounds.

The module introduces key concepts of heritage and culture and presents a variety of disciplinary approaches.

Students will be able to
  • appreciate the disciplinary variety of the humanities
  • appreciate the disciplinary variety of the social sciences and economics
  • understand the different methodological and epistemological approaches involved
  • apply concepts and methods employed in the humanities and social sciences
  • discuss the issues related to heritage as an interdisciplinary challenge
  • have an overview of the problems and challenges related to heritage
  • understand the interdisciplinary challenge of heritage interpretation
  • understand the role of economics and management in an interdisciplinary framework
  • think about culture and its role in systems of market economy

Students will be able to discuss the relevant topics in detail and relate them to relevant case studies during the seminar.

  • Various approaches related to heritage including cultural studies, anthropology, ethnology
  • Philosophical foundations of humanities and social sciences
  • Methodology and epistemology in humanities and social sciences
  • Key concepts of the link between heritage, culture, and society
  • Interpreting heritage from different disciplinary perspectives
  • Heritage as a potential for economic development
  • Reconciling heritage preservation and its economic use
