Learning Outcome:After completion of this module, students will be able to understand the purposes of World Heritage Studies and consequently how they should prepare for a Masters of Arts. Knowledge will be provided on the various fields related to heritage and how best to connect the various disciplines in their work. Skills focused on developing research and scientific inquiry will ensure that those with no prior experience will be prepared to undertake a masters of arts, while those who do have experience will be able to refresh their skills. Finally, the ability to work with an international, intercultural group will prepare all students with the appropriate attitude befitting of a master of arts.
Contents:The module is divided into three parts answering the question “What is the future of World Heritage Studies?”: (1) Introduction into World Heritage Studies including the various higher education approaches to heritage, the journals which publish on heritage, and the various disciplines related to heritage; (2) Interdisciplinary research on heritage studies at BTU, executing field work and reporting the results; (3) Analysis of research, preparing conference proceedings and submitting independent research.

Mandatory Prerequisites:No successful participation in associated phase-out module 37401 Preparatory Humanities and Social Sciences.
Forms of Teaching and Proportion:
  • Seminar / 4 Hours per Week per Semester
  • Self organised studies / 120 Hours
Teaching Materials and Literature:Students will be provided with weekly meetings and lectures, reading materials, and bibliographical references.
All materials and literature will be provided in a moodle course.
Module Examination:Continuous Assessment (MCA)
Assessment Mode for Module Examination:
  • Group presentation, approximately 20 min, of a heritage related discipline + handout (20% of grade of grade)
  • 3 small essays, 500 words each + references (20% of grade)
  • Final Essay 4000 words + references (60% of grade)
Evaluation of Module Examination:Performance Verification – graded
