Learning Outcome:Understanding GIS technology and information management for ecosystem analysis, knowledge of data modelling and analysis with spatial references, skills working with GIS as Desktop application and using Web services, refresh of database and programming technology and workflow modelling, competences in GIS application in environmental and water related projects related to ecosystems and land-use changes. Basic understanding of statistical analysis methods for time and space related environmental data for ecosystem analysis.
Contents:The lectures deal with the introduction to GIS software, data and services, coordinate reference systems, vector data management and analysis, raster data management and analysis, GIS and related data base standards, information modelling within GIS, WEB-GIS and mobile GIS techniques and solutions, metadata and INSPIRE initiative, remote sensing data analysis, environmental information systems and Web portals, interfacing to other software systems and GIS as modelling framework. Besides general GIS application in environmental related projects a specific focus is given to data analysis for ecosystem relevant problems. Application examples and case studies are provided for student assignments as practical training using standard GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS and QGIS) and watershed management tools (e.g. SWAT).
Recommended Prerequisites:Basic knowledge in mathematics, statistics and computer sciences
Mandatory Prerequisites:None
