Learning Outcome: | Understanding of computer based deterministic, dynamic and statistical solution methods for differential equations and statistical datasets including the mathematical foundations of those methods. Mathematical description of water related physical state and behaviour. Application and Evaluation of basic numerical methods for water related simulation models. Understanding and application of fluid mechanics for water related problems. |
Contents: | Fundamentals of tensor algebra and tensor analysis (different coordinate systems, integral theorems of Gauss, Stokes, Green); types and classification of partial differential equations (PDEs); numerical methods (Finite Difference, Finite Volume, Finite Element) for simple PDEs (Poisson equation, heat equation, linear advection, wave equation); Fourier analysis. Physical properties of water, hydrostatics, basic hydrodynamics, flow, friction, energy, flow in channels and pipes, flow in groundwater, rotating and stratified fluids, steady, stationary and instationary states. |
