42428 - Air Quality Assessment and Management Modulübersicht

Module Number: 42428 - module is no longer offered from SS 2018
Module Title:Air Quality Assessment and Management
  Erfassung und Steuerung der Luftqualität
Department: Faculty 2 - Environment and Natural Sciences
Responsible Staff Member:
  • Dr. rer. nat. Will, Andreas
Language of Teaching / Examination:English
Duration:2 semesters
Frequency of Offer: Every winter semester
Credits: 6
Learning Outcome:At the end of the module the student have knowledge about the basics of atmospheric transport and deposition of pollutants. They are able to apply an up-to-date software package to practical applications. The student know the existing international air quality regulations with emphasis on the EU and are able to do an air quality assessment in respect to one pollutant and for one selected country.
Contents:"Atmospheric Dispersion" (supervisor: Dr. Keuler):
  1. Introduction
  2. Anthropogenic emissions (overview)
  3. Atmospheric transport and dispersion of pollutants
  4. Tutorial: Application of the AUSTAL View software package
During the semester the students have to work in groups of two on a smaller application topic.

"Air Quality Assessment and Management" (supervisor: Dr. Will):
  1. Introduction
  2. Air quality assessment based on measured data
  3. Essentials of EU framework directive (1996)
  4. EU daughter directives
  5. EU data base for pollution measurements
  6. Deriving the spatial distribution of pollutants
  7. Use of air-quality models
  8. Determination of model quality (model evaluation)
  9. Air quality regulations in the U.S., Japan and China
During the semester the students have to work in groups of two on a small research project.
Recommended Prerequisites:Knowledge on the university level (bachelor degree) in mathematics and physics
Mandatory Prerequisites:None
Forms of Teaching and Proportion:
  • Lecture / 2 Hours per Week per Semester
  • Seminar / 1 Hours per Week per Semester
  • Practical training / 1 Hours per Week per Semester
  • Self organised studies / 120 Hours
Teaching Materials and Literature:Several textbooks are available in the central library of the university. Special recommendations will be given at the beginning of the two courses, respectively.

Atmospheric Dispersion:
Lecture notes will be distributed. A written tutorial for the software package AUSTAL View is available. (This software package is commercial and cannot be provided free-of-charge to students.)

Air Quality Assessment and Management:
A (Power Point based) presentation containing all viewgraphs presented during the lectures can be downloaded from the internet pages of the Chair for Environmental Meteorology. The presentations from all projects investigated by the students will be summarized in one pdf-File, which can also be downloaded from the net.
Module Examination:Continuous Assessment (MCA)
Assessment Mode for Module Examination:
  • 2 presentations, a 15 min. (50% each)
Students work in groups of two. They have to summarize their findings and deliver it as a Power Point based presentation, report their results orally to all participants and defend their findings during a discussion.
Evaluation of Module Examination:Performance Verification – graded
