World Heritage Studies Students at the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea 19.06.–29.06.2026

As part of the annual study project “48 COM – Behind the Scenes of the World Heritage Committee,” nine students from the World Heritage Studies programme at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg had the opportunity to undertake internships during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea. Under the academic direction of Dr. Britta Rudolff and Jayne Linaker, the students supported the teams of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, ICCROM, IUCN and ICOMOS. The internships provided practical insights into the organisation and working procedures of the World Heritage Committee and into the processes involved in implementing the World Heritage Convention and its Operational Guidelines. The study project combines academic learning with direct experience of international heritage governance, allowing students to observe and contribute to the work taking place behind the formal proceedings of the Committee. Their participation also provided an opportunity to engage with Korean heritage and to gain a broader understanding of international cooperation in the field of World Heritage.
