Academic and professional career

Univ.-Prof. Dr. habil. Herwig Winkler is the head of the Chair of Production and Operations Management at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg. In July 2000 he began his scientific career as Research and Teaching Assistant at the Chair for Production, Logistics and Environmental Management at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria. He completed his doctorate degree in social sciences and economics at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration in November 2004.
In January 2005, Herwig Winkler was nominated as assistant professor and received his habilitation as University professor in March 2009.

On April 1. 2009 he was appointed as university professor and on January 1. 2011 as associate professor. From October 1. 2009 to August 30. 2014, he was head of the Department for Production, Logistics and Environmental Management at the Alpen-Adria Universität of Klagenfurt. From 01.10.2012 to 30.09.2013, Herwig Winkler also was guest professor and head of the Department of Production and Operations Management at the BTU Cottbus.

From 1988 to 1993, Herwig Winkler graduated from the Higher Technical College of Applied Sciences (HTBL) in Ferlach, Austria, where he completed his Matura (high school graduation) with distinction. Subsequently, he studied applied business administration at the University of Klagenfurt, focusing on production, logistics and environmental management as well as controlling and strategic business management, and finished his studies in 1999 with honors.

Regarding his practical experience, Herwig Winkler has worked with different industrial companies; especially companies located in the Carinthia and upper Austria regions. He has also been involved in commercial activities, particularly in the construction-related industry.

After completing his studies, he worked as management assistant of a lighting manufacturer. Moreover, he has conducted consultant activities, carrying out several projects in the field of production and logistics management for national and international companies. 

Until June 2016, parallel with the professorship at BTU, Professor Winkler was the General Manager of the ‘Institute of Production Science and Consulting’, a research and consulting company based in Klagenfurt, Austria, founded by him and two other partners in 2014.
