Economisation instead of academisation Online event with lecture, film and discussion
TOPIC
The introduction of Nursing Science in Germany should give nursing a voice and emphasise the value and complexity of nursing work. The profession should no longer be reduced to low-cost "clean and tidy" care, but should be given the status of a self-determined profession. University-educated nursing staff should contribute to the emancipation of the nursing profession from medical and economic heteronomy.
However, the academisation of the nursing profession is in a poor state. There is hardly any demand for the primary qualifying nursing degree programmes. A joint statement by the German Society for Nursing Science and the German Nursing Council from March 2021 cites a lack of remuneration for students' practical placements, a lack of refinancing for practical guidance and insufficient teaching staff at universities as reasons for this.
However, there are even deeper reasons for the current situation of nursing degree programmes. If only 1.7% of all nursing staff at university hospitals have a university degree, the need for university-educated nurses is hardly recognised in healthcare facilities. Instead, the question is asked: Does nursing need a science at all? What use is theoretical knowledge in a primarily practical profession? From an economic point of view, it seems questionable to invest money in higher education if there is no benefit in practice that corresponds to the costs of the training. Members of the nursing profession themselves perceive qualified nurses as an intellectual elite who no longer care for patients but are trying to secure a privileged position in the healthcare system.
These reservations call into question the process of academisation in nursing. Has its original purpose been turned into its opposite? Can the objections to the academisation of the nursing profession be refuted or are they justified because the attempt to emancipate the nursing profession through academisation was already misguided at the outset?
We invite you to discuss these questions with us and our guests in an online event.
