Day 01 Highlights

BTUMUN 2021 officially started!

More than 80 participants from 35 countries attended the opening ceremony Thus spreading the word of our first MUN event at BTU Cottbus all across the world

We were immensely grateful for the talks given by Prof. Dr. Albrecht (our university's advisor) as well as Mrs. Kunze from the International Relations Office at @btucs.

It was our honour to also welcome Mr. Melzer from @unhcr_germany to BTUMUN 2021. He gave an excellent speech about the importance and necessity of refugee inclusion, inspiring especially our delegates in the UNHCR committee to come up with new innovative solutions.

Our honorary Secretary General, Rezwan Ahmed, opened BTU MUN 2021 conference officially and urged our delegates to use this opportunity to express their opinions on current global challenges.

After the formal welcome, our experienced Chairs took over and started the first debate sessions: UNSC dived head first into the issues surrounding the Yemeni Civil War and started discussing the individual involvement of certain countries in the conflict.

UNHCR began debating about refugees' rights to universal health support and equal access to education.

UNEP started analysing possible mitigation initiatives to counteract the impact of climate change on global health as well as discuss funding strategies.

Our first day was rounded off by a small social event. We tried to virtually take our delegates to our campus as well as give them the opportunity to relax their mind and body with a Yoga session held by our own Secretariat member Shahar Ban Karyaparamban.

Day 02 Highlights

That's a wrap on Day 2!

This morning all three UN committees commenced their sessions and went straight into lively debates surrounding possible solutions that could later be included into their respective resolutions.

The UNSC member states came together to urge the global community to support a ceasefire in the Yemeni Civil War. Thus bringing peace for a region that was so heavily devastated by the impacts of armed conflict. Delegates are still discussing further initiatives and actions to improve the situation.

Even though just one block was formed at the UNHCR committee session, heated debates and cross arguments surrounding topics such as free religious expression, documentation of refugees and health issues at refugee camps ensued. Unique solutions were proposed by the attending delegations but suitable implementation measures are still in discussion.

While debating possible funding solutions for mitigation initiatives as well as the wider impact of climate change on public health systems, the UNEP committee split into two opposing blocks. Whereas one side focuses on active collaboration with the WHO and World Bank, the other party proposes the formation of an independent climate change commission and science based low emission strategies.

While deep discussions were held in each committee, the conference gossip box did fill up with rumours abour who could possibly plot a revenge, which delegate represented their country best as well as small confessions who had the most dazzling smile and best looks

Today's schedule did not end there but the participants had the chance to come together in different fun social events. The Kahoot quiz was full of unexpected questions with delegates still wondering about an anonymous 007 player GameApart gave a new spin on well known board games.

The wonderme was a great way to informally chat with people from all around the world and network. Various movie recommendations, study anecdotes and hilarious MUN stories were exchanged.

Day 03 Highlights

Finale of BTUMUN 2021!

The third day of our conference was a bittersweet experience. On the one hand our dedicated delegates voted on their final resolutions to be passed during the committee session as well as presented their final outcomes at the closing ceremony On the other hand this also means that BTUMUN 2021 has officially adjourned! How fast did this weekend go by?

Here are some insights into the respective committees' debate topics on the third day:

On the final day, UNSC discussed issues surrounding funding programs to rebuild the infrastructure destroyed through military actions. Furthermore the council debated about possibilities to provide COVID tests and vaccinations for the Yemeni population affected by the civil war. The delegates also argued for the involvement of the ICJ.

The UNHCR's debates focused on adapting educational systems to facilitate and ensure knowledge transfer as well as support cultural integration at universities or work places for refugees. Another main aspect discussed and proposed were actions to support access to physical and mental health offers. In honor of todays International Refugee Day, we will also send in the outstanding resolution passed by our UNHCR committe as part of the UN Refugee Challenge.

Delegates discussed the possibility to establish a global carbon market framework for the preservation of the environment as well as secure governance o mitigate the impact of climate change. The committee proposed to conduct a national assessment of the effects of climate change on respective health systems. They also emphasized the importance of the Paris Agreement.
