PhD students may be eligible for scholarships provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The Scholarship Database gives international students useful information about programmes offered by the DAAD as well as other scholarship awarding organisations to finance their research stays in Germany.
Applicants may also consider German political Foundations to apply for funding as these organisations offer specific programmes for international post-graduate students.

Advertisement of Scholarships for Doctoral Studies „International Graduate School: Heritage Studies at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg“ (IGS)
BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg offers 2 scholarships for doctoral students over a duration of 3 years in the frame of the International Graduate School: Heritage Studies at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg in the „Graduate School Scholarship Programme“ (GSSP) of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Payment is 1000 € per month, starting in October 2016. Additional expenses for insurances and for travel costs may also be paid. Successful applicants must get enrolled in the PhD programme in the IGS Heritage Studies.
The call is open only for applicants who are not German citizens and who have not lived in Germany continuously over the last 15 months.
Applicants must have a Bachelor and a Master degree in architecture, urban planning, cultural studies, management or information technologies/digital heritage, which is recognised by German universities. They must also give an outline of their research interests, from which a supervising professor can be identified. Furthermore, recommendations from 2 former professors are required. Admission to studies and provision of scholarships is based on assessments by both the hosting university and DAAD. Candidates must submit their applications at the latest by March 15th, 2016.

Since 2010, the International Graduate School: Heritage Studies offers a structured PhD-Programme, whose research and scientific interests originate from the UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972), the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003), as well as on the UNESCO-Programme „Memory of the World“, which has as its aim the safeguarding and dissemination of the documentary heritage of humanity.
The structured study programme of IGS: Heritage Studies is based on Excellence Guidelines for structured international doctoral programmes. It enables doctoral students to complete their research within three years.
The topics of the doctoral theses must address challenges for the protection and use of heritage in light of recent developments, such as destruction of heritage in the event of war, migration, climate change, gentrification, etc. The research shall be based on disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary scientific approaches. It must identify problems, analyse corresponding reasons and develop strategies in relation to respective fields of research.
In order to apply for PhD-research at the International Graduate School: Heritage Studies you need to follow the standard procedure and submit the following documents:
- Completed application form with annexes.
- Two passport photos.
- Proof of eligibility for admission including a certified copy of the university degree qualifying for Ph.D. or doctoral studies.
- Evidence of all completed degree courses and final exams (certified copies).
- CV.
- A research proposal with timetable of your project (max. 10 pp.).
- Proof of English proficiency by TOEFL, minimum score of 550 points (paper based), 213 points (computer based) or 79 points (internet based); IELTS (minimum 6.5 points).
- List of own academic publications or other academic work.
- A letter of motivation (2 pp.).
- Two letters of reference by distinguished university professors.
Successful applicants are expected to start their PhD research at the International Graduate School: Heritage Studies by October 1st, 2016.
