Prof. Dr. rer.-nat. habil. Wiegleb does research and teaches in the fields of general ecology, biodiversity, and concept development in post-mining landscapes and near-natural open landscapes. He has produced numerous publications on these topics. His research activities are concerned with question of biodiversity as heritage in an increasingly globalised world, in which also the question of the coming climate change is becoming important. For the deepening of a global approach, this research is of fundamental importance. Therefore, Prof. Wiegleb is keen to explore traditional cultural approaches of landscape use with regards to their possibilities for application under changing climatic conditions. This concerns for instance the Japanese Satoyama-approach (sustainable use of protective/municipal forests), which brings a harmonic cultural landscape as a guiding principle in the centre of observation, but also other traditional approaches, such as the region of the Schlabendorf fields near Cottbus. Prof. Wiegleb will supervise Ph.D.-topics in the focus areas 3 and 4.
