Tip of the Month: Research Data Management

The University Library supports researchers at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg in managing their research data.

Research data means all (digital) data, which originate during scientific activity and serve as basis for research results1. The type of data depends very much on the respective discipline. Some examples are series of measurements, images, audiotapes, models, algorithms and scripts which can be structured and stored in a variety of file formats.

Research data are the basis of modern scientific activity. As technical development progresses, ever larger and more complex data volumes can be recorded. In order to enable long term usability, appropriate data management is necessary, also in the sense of (the) "good scientific practice".

More and more research funders expect research data to be sustainably secured and made freely accessible (if possible). For DFG and EU projects, the data management plan is already an integral part of the proposal. This documentation includes the handling, storage and archiving, access and use of research data and metadata. For further information see: www.b-tu.de/en/bibliothek/publishing/research-data.
We offer you consultation on the following topics:

  • Creation of a data management plan
  • Documentation and Metadata
  • Personal data management
  • Archiving and publishing in repositories

Tip: Training courses and workshops on research data management and data management plans will take place in the winter semester 2018/19 (Dates will be announced soon).
