"Echoes of Kalighat: A Journey Through Tradition and Abstraction"
Dipannita “Mamon” Banik is a visual artist whose work forms a bridge between rich tradition and modern expression. Trained in Indian folk painting, oil on canvas, and watercolor, she also enjoys exploring the creative possibilities of and charcoal. She is also the instructor of Rabindranritya (traditional Indian dance style) at the Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU Cottbus).
This exhibition offers a unique dialogue between a revered Indian folk art tradition and the artist's personal, contemporary explorations.
The main display features a vibrant collection of twenty paintings in the Kalighat Pattachitra style. Rendered in watercolor on paper, these works capture the bold lines, dynamic figures, and the spirit of a 19th-century art form born on the streets of Kolkata. This series serves as a window into a rich cultural heritage.
Complementing this traditional series are two panels showcasing some of Ms. Banik's abstract works. Created with oil pastels, these intimate A5-sized pieces offer a contrasting glimpse into her inner world. They are introspective, exploring texture, color, and emotion free from narrative constraints.
Together, these two distinct collections create a journey. "Echoes of Kalighat" invites the viewer to appreciate the discipline and history of a traditional art form while also witnessing the creative freedom of a contemporary artist navigating her own path. It is an exhibition about heritage and individuality, about storytelling and pure expression.
