Astrid Preis studied Integrated Natural Resource Management at the Humboldt University of Berlin, building on her Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences at the University of Bielefeld, specialising in environmental sociology. Her most recent focus there was on gender relations in East German agriculture against the background of the agricultural policy framework.

At BTU Cottbus, she is part of the project "BigTrans - Needs-orientated integrated overall solutions for the installation of large-scale renewable energy systems for a socially designed transformation" , where she is researching the acceptance of solar parks. She is particularly interested in the question of how the energy transition can be organised in a fair and participatory way.
