Cooperative Multi-Agent Systems

Modern engineering problems are growing in complexity as individual systems are being interconnected physically and virtually. Solving tasks in such environments usually requires divide and conquer approaches. One way of achieving this is by splitting complex tasks in subtasks and letting autonomous entities (agents) handle them in a coordinated fashion, in other words, by letting a multi-agent system solve the task.

In this area of research, our focus is to develop and apply distributed and cooperative control techniques that enable the design of multi-agent systems capable of completing complex tasks in a flexible, autonomous and robust fashion. With this aim, within the Innovation Campus Electronics and Micro Sensor Systems Cottbus (iCampus), we work on developing a mobile sensor platform based on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in collaboration with several partners from the areas of micro sensors, computer science and mechatronics. Exemplary application areas for such multi-agent systems comprise wood fire prevention and detection, Agriculture 4.0 and Industry 4.0.

Current topics of interest include:

  • Robust formation control of UAV swarms
  • Mobile and smart sensor networks
