Tip of the month: Reference management

Use a reference management system and you'll have less work to do later

If you collect references for a scientific work, it is important that you can retrace what you have seen and read in books, journal articles and so on. You can capture the bibliographic data by hand. But a lot of catalogues, publishers’ platforms and online databases allow you to export the results directly to a reference management program using a special export format.

Some reference management programs also provide the ability to capture information from the sources that you would like to use later in citation. In Citavi, for example, the quotations can be assigned to own categories and keywords. This quotation collection can be of great help in writing.

The most common reason for using programs is the automatic insertion of references in the text or as a footnote in word processing programs. All references cited in your document are perfectly formatted in your bibliography.

The BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg has purchased a campus license for Citavi. It is also for team work. If you want to work with Citavi, you need Windows. Citavi does not operate with Mac or Linux. We recommend Zotero for Mac or Linux user.
