IBK Departments

Architecture and Visualization   I  Prof. Dominik Lengyel

Architectural Theory  I  Prof. Dr. Albert Kirchengast
Architectural theory examines the intellectual bases and aims of building and thus anchors practical activity in the humanities. Its reflexive conceptual space combines production, use, experience and preservation – the present, history and future of the architectural project. The professorship focuses on hermeneutic-phenomenological approaches.

Building History  I  Prof. Dr-Ing. Alexandra Druzynski von Boetticher
In the department of Building History, historic structures and cities are examined using methods from building archaeology in order to gain insights into their planning, construction and utilization processes as well as urbanistic developments, with the aim of expanding our knowledge of building in the past. The epochs of particular focus are Antiquity, the Gothic period and the 20th century.

Construction History  I  Prof. Dr-Ing. David Wendland
Construction History focuses on the historical aspects of architectural engineering, on procedures in planning and building, on the history of science in the fields of applied geometry and building mechanics, and on historical construction techniques and the conservation of structures. Primary sources include historical technical literature as well as the buildings themselves, which are analyzed using integrated methodological approaches drawn from engineering and the humanities.

Architectural Conservation  I  Prof. Dr. Johanna Blokker
Architectural Conservation involves examination of the built heritage of the past as an expression of shared cultural values, as a carrier of knowledge, memory and identity, as a medium for negotiating social and political processes in society, and not least as a technical challenge. The department's perspective is broadly international and includes a focus on heritage politics, on the materiality, affectivity and sensoriality of heritage, and on conservation in contemporary architectural design and urban planning.

Heritage Management  I  Dr. Britta Rudolff

Cultural Management  I  Prof. Dr. Jens Adam
Jens Adam is a political anthropologist and, since October 2024, Professor of Cultural Management. His research focuses on cultural policy and international cultural cooperation, democracy and authoritarian transformations, as well as Europeanisation and border constellations. In addition to holding academic positions in Berlin, Bremen, Göttingen, and Bielefeld, he has gained practical experience as programme director of a German-Polish cultural centre in Wrocław and in the field of festival management.

Art History  I  Prof. Dr. Sylvia Claus
The Department of Art History aims to capture the aesthetic quality of art, architecture and urban planning and to understand their historical and political dimensions. It represents the subject in its entire breadth. The focus is on the history of ideas and concepts, on the modern since 1800, and on the transdisciplinarity of the arts.
