Das Fachgebiet Ökologie an der BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg besteht seit 1993 und gehört der Fakultät 2 Umwelt und Naturwissenschaften und dem Institut für Umweltwissenschaften und Umwelttechnik an.
Die Forschung konzentriert sich auf Auswirkungen der anthropogenen Nutzung (bspw. Landnutzungs- und Klimawandel) und natürlichen Störung (bspw. Waldbrände) auf die Biodiversität, biotische Interaktionen und Ökosystemprozesse in natürlichen, forstwirtschaftlich und landwirtschaftlich genutzten Ökosystemen. Wichtige Themenfelder sind die Bereitstellung von Ökosystemdienstleistungen, Räuber-Beute Interaktionen, Streuzersetzung durch Bodenfauna und Biodiversitätsschutz mit Fokus auf terrestrische Invertebraten.
Lehrveranstaltungen werden in den Bachelor-, Master- und PhD-Programmen des Internationalen Studienganges "Environmental and Resource Management" und den deutschsprachigen Studiengängen "Umweltingenieurwesen" und "Landnutzung und Wasserbewirtschaftung" angeboten. Schwerpunkte in der Lehre sind die Vermittlung von biologischen und ökologischen Grundkenntnissen. Im Lehrgebiet Biologie sind Schwerpunkte die allgemeine Biologie, die Bodenbiologie und die Parasitologie. Im Lehrgebiet Ökologie liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der Erklärung von Ökosystemen, biotischen Interaktionen und Biodiversitätsschutz.
