In this Masters seminar, students are introduced to the interdisciplinary field of critical urban studies – a distinct strand within urban studies which foregrounds questions of power relations and social injustice in the research and planning of cities. In the summer term 2025, the focus of the critical urban studies seminar will focus on the topic of new energy landscapes, i.e. the shift from fossil-fuelled to renewable energy production. In a loose exchange with a design studio at Habitat Unit at TU Berlin, students will first familiarise themselves with the conceptual foundations such as planetary urbanisation, urban political ecology, peripheralisation and urban assemblage as well as the literature on renewable energy landscapes. In the second part of the seminar, students will develop their own small research project, which is based on examining a selected aspect of the emerging new energy landscapes around Cottbus as well as their urban implications. In the third and concluding part of the seminar, students will develop a set of small design interventions that respond to their findings.
