Motivation

The project goal of the AP9 – “Smart Live Stock Farming” is the development and demonstration of an intelligent wireless sensor system for localization and real-time remote monitoring of cow health and fertility using different wireless communication technologies, such as 5G, LPWAN and radar technologies.

The animal health will be measured to cover the following most important diseases:

  • pH stability in the rumen
  • ketosis
  • Acetosis
  • Mastidis (udder health)

The results of the project go beyond the state of the art in the following topics:

  • Low power architecture for system integration of sensors in the field of pH measurement, temperature and motion
  • Miniaturized antennas with high gain
  • Data connection with 5G connectivity and display via mobile app
  • Localization of herd animals based on own infrastructure
  • Investigation of implantable sensors and radar-based vital parameter recording to monitor the overall health and fertility status of the animals

The aim of the project presented here is therefore to research and develop an innovative Smart Livestock Farming System with

  • a bolus sensor that can be applied in the animal’s rumen with sensors for measuring local body temperature and activity (movement, rumen contraction)
  • localization of the animals by evaluating protocol information of the wireless communication interface in the bolus sensor using synchronized anchor nodes
  • a powerful 5G-based data connection to the communication infrastructure for real-time remote monitoring of animal health
  • a non-invasive externally placed radar sensor to record breathing and heart rate. These additional measurement parameters are intended to complement those of the bolus sensor.
  • an algorithmic evaluation and suitable presentation for the user
