What is the relation of built structures, sites and spaces, and political ideas? How are these material artefacts and their character conceived as part of a special category of heritage; interpreted and handled in a particular way? How to define these particularities exactly? How can we deal with material remains of ideas that are possibly opposed or seemingly indifferent to our own convictions? Why not just writing it off? What is the benefit of paying attention to structures, connected primarily with uncomfortable or dissonant aspects of our history?

These questions will be addressed with special regards to architecture, monuments and sites interpreted as testimonies for the work of political ideas. Starting off from examples in Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, input will be given both in two seminary sessions and in the course of two excursions to one less and to one more prominent place. Input sessions and excursions will be accompanied by specialists and key experts in the field.

The input is meant to provide impulses for individual research on related case studies. The results shall be presented to an expert target group via a poster exhibition as the core assignment of the study group.
