This Master’s seminar introduces students to critical urban studies, an interdisciplinary field within urban studies that foregrounds questions of power relations and social injustice in the research, design, and planning of cities. In the summer term 2026, the seminar focuses on post-fossil extractivism, understood as resource exploitation linked to the transition from fossil-fuel–based to renewable energy systems. In the first part of the course, students will engage with key conceptual foundations, including planetary urbanisation, urban political ecology, peripheralisation, as well as core literature on extractivism and post-fossil transformation. In the second part of the seminar, students will develop a small-scale research and design project. This project involves (a) critically examining a selected case study of post-fossil urban extractivism in the region around Cottbus, and (b) re-designing this case to move beyond extractivist logics and towards a more ecological and socially just urban future.
