Zusammenfassung

Vetiver grass, due to its unique morphological and physiological characteristics has been found to be highly tolerant to extreme conditions. This study proposes to evaluate the feasibility of Vetiver for the uptake and translocation of toxic metals in gold and uranium mine tailings. Environmental benefits will include the elimination of pollution source and economic improvement will be realized. The goal of the proposed research is to develop highly skilled researchers and postgraduate students. Nationally, the research will develop the research capacity of students and women researchers with the aim to provide a knowledge base from which students will be equipped with the necessary skills to bridge the gap of qualified chemists. The project will also facilitate the collaboration between Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), Pretoria, RSA and Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) Cottbus, Germany with the benefit of sharing the project outcomes.
