Antarctica preserves a unique and fragile corpus of cultural heritage. As the UNESCO World Heritage Convention is not operational
in Antarctica, the Antarctic Treaty System governs cultural heritage in Antarctica, which maintains its own formal Antarctic List of Historic Sites and Monuments. This study project will explore how cultural significance, HSM designation mechanisms, and heritage governance function within an international space without sovereign territorial jurisdiction.
