COLLOC23 Collaborative Production of Transformation Knowledge in Self-Organised Occupations

Hybrid Workshop in Rio de Janeiro

Since 2018, a transdisciplinary group of actors that includes teachers and researchers from German and Brazilian universities, and local activists in Brazil has been carrying out collaborative workshops in a self-organised community in Rio de Janeiro. The workshops aim at co-producing transformation knowledge and are called “COLLOC”, which stands for "Collaborative Production of Transformation Knowledge in Self-Organized Occupations”. The production of transformation knowledge allows us to integrate knowledge(s) and practices coming from various actors in order to tackle complex urban development challenges in a more situated, participatory and innovative way. Transformation, we believe, is achieved through collaborations between a plurality of actors both human and nonhuman.

By participating in the COLLOC experience, students have the opportunity to learn and share their expertise on a concrete social problem in a local context by practising, testing and reflecting on mutual learning and transdisciplinary work with different actors from academia, society and space. Furthermore, students will learn and implement a methodology for planning and designing systemic scenarios that lead to 1:1 interventions in space and integrated strategies for the future development of the self-organised community Solano Trindade. This methodology, called Dual Design Strategy, will provide students with tools to approach the multiple processes of human and non-human actors in complex planning and design projects.

STRUCTURE OF THE WORKSHOP

The COLLOC Workshop is a DAAD-funded international alumni workshop and is paired with different teaching modules from the TUB and the BTU Cottbus. The seminar Towards an Insurgent Urbanism (FG Habitat Unit), and the module Exkursion COLLOC23 (FG Stadtplanung BTU Cottbus). This means that besides working with inhabitants and local activists, you will be working with alumni and students from different universities.

The workshop will take place in three phases, which are supported by appropriate and specific pedagogical tools. These will enable sustained participation in the entire workshop process for both online and on-site participants. Participation of BTU students can be online or on-site. On-site participation is possible at their own expense (i.e. flights, accommodation).

During the workshop, participants are expected to:

- combine and integrate their practical expertise with the local expertise of academics, technicians, residents and students from the UFRJ and the TUB.

- support the ongoing projects as a means of knowledge exchange and production

- jointly design future scenarios for the further development of the focal area

- develop local "solutions to problems" by applying systemic design principles and transdisciplinary approaches

- Develop ideas for the implementation of jointly produced knowledge in 1:1 interventions, which are implemented together with students and local actors as a design-build project.

There are no participation fees. The workshop language is English (knowledge of Portuguese or Spanish is an advantage)

The phases of the workshop are:

1 - 3 September 2023: Phase 1 (online) preparation and problem definition

22 - 29 September2023: Phase 2 (hybrid: online and in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) knowledge integration and development

30 September to 1 October 2023: Phase 3 (hybrid: online and in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) reflection and evaluation of transformation knowledge
