Reimagining Bazar Abbas
Exploring Urban Recovery Scenarios
The MEC unit at the Chair of Landscape Architecture invites interested students and young graduates in Egypt as well as Master's students of BTU to apply for the urban recovery workshop that will take place in Cairo and Port Said from 5th to 14th of September 2023.
This workshop is the second event in the series of activities planned for the project Bazar Abbas: Recovery Lab of Port Said. The event is dedicated to exploring diverse scenarios for the urban recovery of Bazar Abbas and its immediate urban surroundings. We will approach the task through various recovery methodologies under the farmework of integrated conservation and development including participatory planning, resilience planning, critical reconstruction, climate adaptaion and heritage-led regeneration. Through expert inputs, excursions, engaging discussions, and hands-on activities, participants will gain invaluable insights and practical skills to envision and shape the future of Bazar Abbas.
Who can apply:
Senior Bachelor’s students, graduates and Master’s students(in Egypt) in the fields of architecture, urban design and urban planning.
BTU Master's Students in the fields of architecture, urban design and urban planning as well as heitage studies with background in Architecture.
Criteria:
- Enthusiasm and critical thinking
- Experience in identifying relevant urban conservation and development problems
- Experience in defining tasks, methods and strategies to solve problems
- Ability to design qualified concepts in a traceable manner
- Very good command of English language

The workshop has the capacity for 20 funded participants, incluidng 15 Egyptians an 5 BTU students. The fund covers travel and accommodation costs.
Call for Application Urban (Heritage) Narratives Workshop: 9 - 16 March 2023
Every Taracina has a Story

The MEC unit at the Chair of Landscape Architecture invites interested students and young graduates in Egypt to apply for the Urban (Heritage) Narratives workshop that will take place in Port Said from 9th to 16th of March 2023.
This workshop is the first event in the series of activities planned for the project "Bazar Abbas: Recovery Lab of Port Said'' and will address the questions of urban narratives and collective memory, conflict and recovery, urban mapping and heritage interpretation through the perspective of local communities in Port Said. During the workshop, participants will be provided with various inputs addressing the above-mentioned themes and then will carry out a practice to document and map local-centered urban narratives of Port Said affected by years of war and conflicts in the city. Timber veranda or Taracina as an integral component of Port Said`s Architecture will be regarded as a leading element during the practice. The outcome of this workshop will further be developed and employed for the planning workshop in September 2023 that will focus on formulating urban recovery guidelines in the historic core of Port Said.
Who can apply:
Senior Bachelor’s students, graduates and Master’s students (in Egypt) in the fields of architecture, urban design, urban planning and heritage studies.
Criteria:
- Enthusiasm and critical thinking
- Interest in and skills for working with local communities
- Basic understanding of the notion of heritage and its role within the urban planning process
- Survey, documentation and mapping skills
- Native level of Arabic language
- Good command of English language
