Program

The IBID will bring together specialists and experts in the fields of bioanalytics, biomedical and translational research, autoimmune diagnostics, digitalization, and engineering. Join our event and find partners to drive your business successfully forward!

For the execution of the IBID we will use the browser-based OpenSource tools BigBlueButton or WebEx. 

Please look in the program under the session you want to visit, there you will find the login data.

We kindly ask you to log in about 15 minutes before the start of the lectures to avoid delays.

Program overview

Data Science Workshop

Time: 9:00 - 12:00

We start with pre-conference workshops on data science and a statistical computer language R.

This introductory workshop provides training in data mining with the R environment. Examples presented in the workshop will focus on applications in natural and life sciences. R is a quickly developing tool for data analysis, embraced both by academia and industry (Google, Microsoft or Facebook). This workshop will introduce attendees to key concepts of data science and give a hands-on experience without requiring a previous knowledge of R.

Since the IBID 2020 / PPRAEMED.BIO Symposium is an open access conference, participation is free of charge.

The workshop will cover fundamental topics including:

  • getting to know R packages and R-related tools for data science
  • data manipulation (import of data, summarizing and transforming large volumes of data),
  • data visualization (graphical exploratory analysis, visualization of predictive models),
  • machine learning (feature selection, tuning of predictors).

Exercises from this workshop employ data from life sciences, with a special focus on biomedical sciences and bioinformatics. Despite that fact, skills mastered during this event can be easily transferred to other applications.

Target audience:

The course is tailored for attendees with little to no experience with R. Any programming experience is welcomed, but not required to participate in the workshop. Topics touched during the workshop stuits equally needs of participants from industry and research.

Requirements:

To participate in this course you are required to bring your own laptop, with a recent version of R (http://cran.us.r-project.org/) and Rstudio (https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/). To install necessary packages and download data run in R the following script:

Although the event is free of charge, participants must register under https://www.b-tu.de/ibid/registration, as available places are limited and information is required for certified participation. Participation in the free IBID conference is not necessary but recommended.

Trends in Microbiota and Microbiome Research - From Regional to International Impact

The human microbiota has received considerable attention in recent years and has been the focus of numerous research projects. The term microbiota refers to the entirety of all microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi, that inhabit the human body, such as gut, skin, mouth, and respiratory system. All genes of these microorganisms are termed microbiome. It is estimated that a human being is colonised by at least an equal number of microbiota as he or she has somatic cells. Thereby, the composition is highly variable and is influenced by various factors such as nutrition, immune status, and medication.

Driven by advances in technologies and significant reduction of costs for sequence analysis the microbiota and microbiome research has increased considerably in recent years. Thereby, research focuses on the behaviour, interactions, and function of microbes within a specified environment. The challenge now is to better understand the balance between human and microbes and its role in human health and disease.

Significant microbiome research activities can be found in the Berlin Brandenburg area and beyond. This symposium will not only present the latest projects from science and industry. You are also invited to discuss future trends in this field, to network, and to encourage further activities.

The symposium is jointly organised by glyconet Berlin Brandenburg e.V., the local network in glycobiology and glycobiotechnology, and Innovation Hub 13, a joint platform between the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau and the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus - Senftenberg for improved knowledge and technology transfer.

Medicine and Health of Ageing - Research, Therapy and Health Care

At the same time, the module of the Faculty of Health Sciences "Medicine and Health of Ageing - Research, Therapy and Health Care" will take place. Prof. Dudenhausen will give an overview of the new faculty in his introductory lecture. This will be followed by the opening lecture which will be held by Till Bachmann and Holger Schulze (University of Edinburgh, UK). After a short introduction we will start with the PRAEMED.BIO Symposium, which is organised by the Wachstumskern PRAEMED.BIO - Precision Medicine through Biomarker-Based Diagnostics - Senftenberg. Modern cancer therapy is caught between technological and scientific developments, demographic change, optimal patient care and affordable services. This difficult situation for patients, doctors and cost units can be addressed by precision medicine. Precision medicine is based on personalised diagnostics. This allows patients to be stratified precisely in advance of a therapy and subsequently receive optimal treatment.

          Symposium on Industrial Biotechnology

          Like the day before, another session will take place in parallel which is organized by the HealthCapital Berlin Brandenburg cluster and the High Performance Center "Functional Integration", and deals with the topics Synthetic biology, Platform technology for cell-free production and Biofunctionalization of Polymer Materials.  Professor Fabian Commichau (BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg) will start the session with a lecture on bacterial genome minimization. Afterwards, the two research groups PZ-Syn (project leader: Dr. S. Kubick; Fraunhofer IZI-BB) and BioPol (project leader: Prof. J. Ganster; Fraunhofer IAP) will give insights into their current research projects.
