FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
- I cannot access external websites (e.g. www.google.de). What should I do?
External websites can only be accessed via a proxy server. To do this, you must configure the proxy server settings on your system. For more information, see Proxy configuration - I cannot access my GMX or WEB.de mailbox via my email programme (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) on the hall of residence network. What could be the problem?
The PCs in the hall of residence have IP addresses from a private IP address range. This means that they only work within the university data network and cannot connect directly to the internet. That is why you need a proxy server for external websites, for example. When retrieving mail from external mail servers (e.g. GMX, Web.de) using POP or IMAP, the PC attempts to establish a direct connection to this mail server, but this cannot work. There is no ‘proxy server’ for this. You can therefore only access your mailbox using a browser via the web interface. Another option is to forward your emails to your university mailbox. - I occasionally get the error message ‘There is a conflict with the IP address...’ in Windows.
This error message means that two computers are using the same IP address.
This address was probably assigned twice by mistake.
Please contact the computer centre in Senftenberg or Sachsendorf with the error message. - Some services, e.g. email and WWW, no longer work even though I have only installed firewall software. What could be the problem?
This is most likely due to the settings of the firewall software. Please check the configuration.
Caution is also advised if firewall software was already installed on the computer. This does not provide any additional security. On the contrary, two different products are not compatible with each other. The only solution here is to uninstall the software.
