Perceptions of orientalizing architecture
Lecturer
Prof. Dr. Turgut Saner
Content
Although its geographical boundaries are somewhat unclear, Orientalism is a phenomenon originating from Europe that rests on the centuries-old encounters between the East and the West. It presents academic dimensions; contents intermixed with fantasies to encourage also political & colonial attitudes, as well as aspects that add richness to branches of art, such as painting, literature and music. The study project focuses on examples of orientalizing architecture revealing for instance Alhambra inspirations, Ottoman minarets or Indian cupolas from various parts of the world, especially Germany and Turkey. The buildings to be selected during the course process will be examined from historical and stylistic perspectives; the visual perceptions they create will be discussed and their cultural heritage values emphasized.
