Installing and configuring the IBM Spectrum Protect client software

The installation of the software and the configuration of parameters required for the operation of the IBM Spectrum Protect client may only be carried out by the system manager/administrator of the designated computer or authorised IT services personnel.

1. Software installation

Depending on the operating system you're using, installing the Spectrum Protect client software can be a bit different, so we can't give you a standard routine here.
The installation should be done by the admin responsible for the department/institution.
You can get the software from the manufacturer's FTP server and should save it in a standard or temporary directory.
The file(s) created in this way are now integrated into the existing operating system environment using the usual installation routine. Only the part of the total package that is absolutely necessary for the intended use should be installed.
For use of the backup/archive, this means that only the relevant part for ensuring the backup/archive functionality needs to be set up. For Unix clients, this means only the ‘API’, ‘BA’ and, if necessary, ‘msg’ parts. Existing dependencies on necessary elements from other parts should be resolved without further action.
Finally, the decompressed file(s) used for installation can be removed from the system or temporary directory.

2. Software configuration

The client software is configured for UNIX using the file ‘/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsm.sys’ and for Win32 systems using the file ‘C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\dsm.opt’. All relevant entries can be made using the graphical tool for backup/archive.
For special customisation of the configuration to individual requirements, support can be obtained by contacting Spectrum Protect Administration directly.
The most important parameters for a UNIX and a Win32 environment are described below as examples:
