Local administrators - Area of responsibility
In accordance with the network usage regulations, the head of a structural unit is responsible for the organization and operation of data processing equipment in their area. See Section 3.2 of the “Regulations for the Use of Networks and Communication Services at BTU Cottbus” dated August 28, 2009 (https://www.b-tu.de/it-services/kontakt/richtlinien).
He or she may appoint an administrator to perform the associated tasks. Users of a structural unit should always contact the administrator appointed by the head of the structural unit directly with any questions or tasks relating to IT.
The administrator should register themselves on the mailing list "sysops" (https://lists.b-tu.de) and unsubscribe from it when they cease to be an administrator. This mailing list provides information about central services at BTU Cottbus - Senftenberg (e.g., announcements of maintenance work) and also serves as a means of communication between administrators.
The range of tasks performed by an administrator should be based on the following points, among others:
- Inform the IT Services, Networks/Security department (network(at)b-tu.de) of the structural unit for which they perform administrative tasks.
- Ensure the secure operation and configuration of the structural unit's devices connected to the BTU Cottbus - Senftenberg data network, including the installation of all available security updates.
- Decommissioning of devices belonging to the structural unit for which secure operation can no longer be guaranteed.
- Management of the IP address range assigned by the IT Services, Networks/Security department, including the assignment of IP addresses to individual end devices belonging to the structural unit.
- Coordinating and commissioning the activation/deactivation of individual network sockets in the IP network of the structural unit vis-à-vis the IT Services, Networks/Security department (by email to network(at)b-tu.de).
- Determination of host names (FQDNs - Fully Qualified Domain Names) for the end devices of the structural unit and commissioning of the registration of these FQDNs in the central DNS of the BTU Cottbus - Senftenberg (by email to hostmaster(at)b-tu.de).
- Enforcement of the rules of the network usage policy in your own structural unit. This includes, among other things, the strict prohibition of “installing and operating additional access options (including access points) in addition to the existing infrastructure.”
