Building Archaeology: Outsourcing? How to understand and document a building

Lecturer

Dr.-Ing. Peter I. Schneider

Content

Why is authenticity so important when debating about diverse approaches to architectural preservation? What is the particular value of the authentic fabric? Should we call it ´documentary value´ or rather ´informational value´? But more important: How to assess the significance of a building not only as some attributed cultural or social value, but as a resource for scientific and scholarly research?
These is the kind of questions centered around the field of ´Bauforschung´ as a primary approach to building archaeology. The course on ´Building archaeology´ combines general knowledge and reflection on purpose, methods and techniques with practical experience of field work. Thereby, teaching is concerned with raising awareness about the practical needs of Bauforschung and field work as an indispensable fascet of heritage and site management concerned with a category of historical sources which are not kept in- but outside the archives and museums.
Two exercises on two weekends will serve as a practical approach both to the basic methodology of building archaeology and surveying, and, at the same time, to practical aspects of heritage managment. The exercises will take place in Cottbus, conected to a small historical architectural object offside the campus. For final assignment participants will prepare a basic set of documentation as tought theoretically in the lectures.
