What exactly is a Künstlerhaus/artist’s house? When compared to a museum, it becomes clear that an Künstlerhaus/artist’s house cannot be defined quite so precisely. Even a typological analysis reveals that it combines several fundamental functions: it is a residence, a studio and an exhibition space. Furthermore, there are examples that demonstrate a very diverse programmatic focus: the Künstlerhaus/artist’s house can be a microcosm, closely linked to an artist’s biography. It can also keep alive the memory of a specific artist’s work. However, a Künstlerhaus/artist’s house can also be a very public, social space that connects the local art scene. As an institution, it promotes artistic creation. All these different roles that this typology can assume make a clear definition difficult.
Through excursions to selected sites and joint discussion, we aim to gain a precise understanding of this typology. This seminar therefore combines the fields of architecture, museology and exhibition design, enabling participants to form their own perspective on the initial question.
