Museum Architecture and Exhibition Design

The idea to collect artefacts is as old as mankind. Presenting collections is not a recent invention either. The term »museum« itself is derived from sanctuaries of »Muses« – goddesses of the arts. The popular idea of presenting collections started at the end of the 18th and in the beginning of the 19th century. Presenting artefacts has always been related to the fields of architecture and design and the idea to communicate the values and significance of different pieces of a collection.

In the seminar, the field of museology will be combined with the fields of architecture and exhibition design. Every week we will visit a museum or an exhibition. The students will go on field trips to discuss structures, classification systems, information systems and space itself and develop their own position towards museum concepts and exhibition designs.
