Applied Art History and Museology (Online) Memory store and place for discourse: Examining the museum!

In the course of global dynamization processes, the role of the museum as, by definition, a traditional place for the preservation, interpretation and promotion of cultural memory is increasingly taking on the role of a place where aesthetic as well as socio-political and socio-cultural questions are presented in the light of the respective collections, exhibitions and other formats and be discussed.
In our course we want to examine the ideas and models that underlie the different forms of museums. The collection and presentation history of the respective institutions will be analyzed, the didactic purpose of the presentations will be asked and the respective forms of communication and mediation will be examined.
The critical analysis of strategies, concepts and visions of the respective institutions should always be carried out in the context of current discourses and against the background of the question of the social function and role of the museum in question.

Based on the examination of personal museum experiences, students get to know a wide range of different types of museums over the course of their studies and gain insight into various practical aspects of museum work.
The aim of the course is to gain a critical perspective on the challenges and potential of museums as institutions for the preservation of cultural heritage and the transmission of cultural values in the midst of global and constant change.
