Set-up and procedure
Briefing (5 minutes):
- The exercise leader explains the course of the exercise and the rules.
- One group member is appointed to hide the rubber duck. Everyone else leaves the room during this time.
Hiding the duck (5 minutes):
- The selected group member hides the rubber duck in the room. It is important that the hiding places are chosen in such a way that the duck remains visible and is not completely hidden.
- Once the duck has been hidden, the rest of the group re-enters the room.
Search phase (10-20 minutes):
- Participants move wordlessly around the room looking for the rubber duck.
- As soon as someone has discovered the duck, he/she sits down on the floor or on a chair without saying a word. This gesture signals to the others that the duck has been found without revealing its exact location.
- The search ends when all participants are seated.
Reflection (10-15 minutes):
- After the search phase, the group comes together and reflects on the exercise. Questions for reflection could be:
- What was it like to move around the room without saying a word?
- How did it feel to find the duck and sit down?
- What did you learn about non-verbal communication during the exercise?
