A zoo for the land of numbers
"A Zoo for Numberland" is an exercise that aims to introduce children to basic Mathematics and geometric concepts in a fun and creative way. In this exercise, children create their own world by integrating different mathematical ideas and shapes into the concept of a zoo.
More information about the exercise can be found here.
Number of participants
Group of 5 to 15 children
Age recommendation
from 4 years
Duration
from 60 minutes
Space
You need a room that is large enough for the children to move around freely. A large playroom or an outdoor area is ideal for building the geometric shapes and designing the animal enclosures.
Construction and process
The building material consists of wooden sticks connected with pieces of tubing. Prepare the wooden sticks and pieces of tubing so that the children can easily put them together. Make sure there is enough space for the different countries (country of three, country of four, country of five). Each country has its own rules: Triangles are used in the country of three, squares in the country of four and pentagons in the country of five. Two gatekeepers, played by the children, make sure that everyone has the right building blocks.
