Interview brochures on everyday racism in Cottbus and Potsdam

Our collection includes a series of brochures and postcards that deal with the topic of everyday racism in the Brandenburg cities of Cottbus and Potsdam. These documents offer valuable insights into the personal experiences of people who have experienced discrimination and marginalisation. The brochures presented here are important sources for understanding and combating racism in everyday life.

We would like to express our special thanks toOpferperspektive - Solidarisch gegen Rassismus, Diskriminierung und rechte Gewalt e. V.which provided us with several copies of the brochures free of charge. The brochures are part of our topic box Discrimination Sensitivity, can but can also be borrowed individually.

"Like a fish in an aquarium." Everyday racism in Cottbus (2021)

One of the people interviewed for this brochure felt like a fish in an aquarium, an object of observation, when a Cottbus bus driver threw her off the bus for no reason and even her white, German friend did not intervene. Situations like this were and still are part of everyday life in Cottbus for people who are not perceived as white and therefore as belonging. The interview transcripts in this brochure show a small part of this world of experience.

"Many don't dare to address things" Everyday racism in Potsdam (2013)

In 2009, Opferperspektive published the brochure "Eigentlich fühle ich mich wohl hier" about everyday racism in Potsdam. Four years later, Potsdam residents who had experienced exclusion and discrimination due to the colour of their skin, their language or their origin were interviewed again. Many of them enjoy living in this city and feel like Potsdamers - actually.

"I actually feel comfortable here." Everyday racism in Potsdam (2009)

In this brochure, seven Potsdam residents report on everyday experiences of racism in their city. The subsequent text "Integration Efforts of the City of Potsdam" discusses the efforts of the city and urban society at the time to counteract this racism and enable all people in Potsdam to live a good life with equal rights in a municipality that sees itself as cosmopolitan.
