Mirror aisle Change your perspective and let your gaze wander...

Nature offers us a huge spectrum of colours. How often do we walk through beautiful landscapes and yet fail to notice the many different plays of light and shadow, shapes and structures? The mindfulness and perception exercise can be used to train participants' mindful seeing and perception/associations. Ideal for seminars with nature and/or experiential education content.

Set-up and procedure

Make yourself comfortable on a bench on the campus, by a meadow, a pond or in the forest and let your gaze wander. You can ask yourself the following questions:

  • What do I see when I look down, up, sideways or straight ahead?
  • What is new? What have I never noticed before?
  • What shapes are there?
  • How do light and shadow fall?
  • What is moving?
  • What images come into my consciousness? Do fond memories from my childhood come to mind and give me strength?
  • Perhaps an animal appears - what does that do to you?

You can also go one step further to change your perspective - with the so-called "mirror walk". You will need a small mirror and a place with trees.
Hold the mirror to the tip of your nose and roam freely through the forest. Experiment with the angle of the mirror so that you always get a different perspective. How does your view of things change? What do you feel?
