Toaster feedback
The "Toaster feedback" exercise is designed to help participants reflect on their own learning development, assess their current level of knowledge and identify any gaps in their knowledge. For teachers, it provides valuable registering for the following semester and indicates which topics may need to be covered in more depth. The exercise can be used in various contexts, such as seminars, workshops, training courses or lectures.
We discovered the method here at Sandra Dirks.
Number of participants
5 to 30 people
Duration
approx. 15-45 minutes (depending on group size and depth of discussion)
Place
Seminar room with a whiteboard or blackboard to which the picture cards and moderation cards can be attached. There should be enough space for the participants to gather in front of the whiteboard/board and registering for the following semester.
Additional materials required
- Magnets or adhesive tape to attach the picture cards
- Sticky notes/moderation cards and pens
Structure and procedure
Preparation
The exercise includes three picture cards with different toaster motifs, which are attached to a whiteboard or blackboard at a sufficient distance from each other so that all participants can see them. The sticky notes/moderation cards and pens are then laid out for the participants.
Procedure
Introduction: Firstly, the participants are welcomed and informed about the purpose of the exercise. The trainer explains that the exercise will visually express the current assessment of their own level of knowledge and preparation for the module.
Asking a key question: The group is then asked a key question, e.g. "How well prepared do you feel for this module?".
Explanation of the picture cards: The trainer briefly explains the meaning of the three picture cards:
- Picture card 1: Toaster with untoasted slices of bread (for start/basic knowledge)
- Picture card 2: Toaster toasting the slices of bread (for intermediate/advanced)
- Picture card 3: Toaster from which the finished toast pops out (for very good/almost ready for the test)
Write down feedback: The trainer now asks the participants to write down their assessment and any brief comments or reasons on a sticky note/moderation card.
Attach feedback: The participants then attach their sticky notes around the corresponding toaster picture card.
Evaluation: Once everyone has attached their registering for the following semester, they go through the results together. The registering for the following semester can be discussed with each other. The participants can explain their comments if they wish. They should also talk about what is going well and which areas may need to be further developed.
