Tower of Power

How do we want to talk to each other? What is important to us? Who is actually leading here? Questions upon questions that pose great challenges for groups and need to be answered in order to achieve the desired goals. Communication and interaction skills are key and can be practised with the help of the "Tower of Power".

The aim is to build a (large) tower together as a group. They can decide for themselves exactly how high they want it to be. Achieving the goal is not always easy, especially if there is a lack of coordination or agreement, although the construction method of the components does not allow for a hectic approach. The task can therefore only be solved through precise consultation and organised, joint action by all team members, which in turn is a prerequisite for 'fun' team building. The "Tower of Power" is also suitable for working on topics such as the construction of a value house or to illustrate strategic project management by sticking small pieces of paper on the building blocks, which should ultimately be built on top of each other in a row (one after the other).

Number of participants

Minimum: 6; optimum: 12; maximum: 24

Duration

10-45 minutes for pure goal achievement, without evaluation discussion

Space

Large room or outdoor area, approx. 8 metres

Set-up and procedure

At the beginning, all participants line up in a large circle, with eight wooden blocks randomly placed vertically in the centre with a slit pointing upwards . This area is demarcated and may not be reduced/entered during the activity. Depending on the desired level of difficulty, it is recommended that one of the eight wooden blocks is placed with the slot pointing downwards. It can be used as a base block and starting point, as it is more difficult to move due to its lower centre of gravity. All participants then take a rope end in their hands, at the other end of which is a safety catch, the so-called 'crane'. The wooden blocks may only be moved with this, i.e. they may not be touched with hands or feet. Nor may the ends of the rope be shortened during the entire game. The task is then to steer the crane attached to the ropes together in order to ultimately place the components on top of each other and build a tower.
